biding time.
Who: Micah (OPEN)
What: Waiting
Where: The Bar
When: 9 pm

A vampire was sitting at the end of the bar, about as noticeable as a shadow cast against the wall. He cradled his drink in his hands, staring into it, as if all the answers to his problems were floating around inside. Individual voices around him blended into a low hum.

Micah was thinking. He thought about the little girl he had met a few nights ago, whose mother had been killed, and wondered if the murder investigation would lead to anything. Knowing humans, probably not. They have a knack for only seeing what they want to see, until it's too late.

The days of darkness had been relatively uneventful. A few children had been kidnapped, and a few people were dead, but that's all. Micah found himself vaguely disappointed. The vampires here were cautious. They cleaned up after themselves, but they seemed disorganized. Maybe there were too few of them to attempt anything at this point. After all, Micah hadn't met a single one face to face yet, and he had expected a town that experienced day-long darkness every year to be crawling with vampires.

Then again, a part of him was relieved. Micah wasn't ready to fight again. Even if there was nothing worth revealing here, he had to lie low for a while.

Grant sat down at the bar, ordered a beer, and took a long swig. Was it just him or was the town becoming emptier and emptier? Were people's faces becoming darker and sadder and more shadowed, or was that Grant's own fear showing?

Either way, this place was starting to creep him the fuck out.

He took another drink.

Micah was brought out of his reverie when someone sat down near him. He glanced over, saw the person's face, and grimaced. It was the man he had bitten just last night.

The guy had left his window unlocked, so Micah had slipped in and fed. No harm done--Micah almost never bit to kill anymore. But in the middle of it, Micah almost chocked to see his victim's eyes crack open halfway. Thankfully, the man had just rolled over and went back to sleep. He probably had thought he was still dreaming. But Micah was worried he'd remember his face, so he quickly turned away.

Grant reached up to touch his neck again. For whatever reason, he'd woken up with a strange sore right there on his neck. Maybe a bug had bitten him or something. A big one.

Grant waved it off and ordered another beer.

"Hey," he said to one of the only other people in the bar with him, "Do you know what time it is?"

Micah was so busy trying to ignore the guy next to him, it took a second for him to register that he had just been asked a question.

"Um," he glanced at his watch, then reluctantly made eye contact with the other man, trying not to let his glaze slip down to the mark he had left the night before, "About five past nine."

Grant froze when he caught the other man's eyes, though he didn't really understand why.

"Oh," he replied, "Oh, thanks. Uh, Grant Hopkins."

Now if Grant could just remember why this guy looked so familiar...

Micah tried to smile in a way that would pass as friendly. "I'm Micah." He'd lost his last name a while back. "I'm, uh, new here."

Well, that didn't explain anything.

"Er, nice to meet you, Micah," Grant said, smiling back in his friendly way. "Have we met? I mean, you look kind of familiar..."

Micah's shoulders seemed to tense a little, but the smile stayed in place. "I don't think that's possible, I mean, I just got here the other day from Rhode Island," he lied, "Unless you've been there and happened to see me..." He shrugged good-naturedly.

"Never been," Grant smirked, "So, I guess we've never met. Unless it was a dream or something!"

Really, it was supposed to be a joke.

((oh my gosh, I fail at replying! I've been super busy at work D:))
